Project Description

As part of the hospital improvement development scheme for Hull Royal Infirmary, the new intensive care facility was tendered by Hull University Teach Hospital NHS Trust, which involved the design and build of a three storey unit to offer extra space for the intensive care department.

For this particular project, there were four phases to tender for which included Demolition, Civil Engineering and the complete Superstructure envelope with Fit Out by others. Each of these phases required separate tender enquiries which were proposed at the earliest opportunity to engage with a Design & Build (D&B) contractor and initiate the work as soon as possible. Due to our pro-active approach towards tendering, it meant these were based on limited informative with indicative plans and specifications. However, with our expert team and wealth of knowledge we successfully secured three phases out of the four phased plan. Majority of this scheme entailed working alongside the fit out contractor in order to develop and finalise many aspects of the project.

Project Analysis

This project consisted of many complex elements starting with the demolition of the original RMO building and its close proximity to the newly constructed Ward 38, A&E department and adjacent Ambulance route.

From here, the evolution of the foundation solution began which had to be designed around existing services to ensure no disruptions occurred. The construction of the structure and envelope of the intensive care unit continued to develop whilst the design aspects were still progressing and being finalised. We were faced with multiple challenges throughout this project but we were able to accommodate by using our skilled team and extensive wealth of knowledge and experience that we posses as a group. Our niche is the capability of being able to offer a flexible and can-do approach for many aspects of design and build contracts. A vital aspect to the entire project was to ensure crucial planning around the blue light ambulance route as to not cause delays. We carried out a deep analysis of all phases to certify an efficient yet high quality standard of all work.
