Project Description
Ashcourt were employed by Biowise Ltd, under a JCT Design & Build (D&B) Contract, to construct a state of the art, In-Vessel Composting Facility, including Reception Building, Welfare Facility and extensive infrastructure works. Build Period 52 weeks. The inital challenge was to construct a new junction on the A530 and install a 1.5km long road. Once the site was connected to civilisation, works commenced in the earnest with constructing the new facility that was to receive Green and Food for Cheshire East Council.
The composting process involves the treatment and sanitising of waste product within eight large aerated sanitising tunnels, constructed in Reinforced concrete, to provide clean compost.
During the treatment process the extreme heat generated, coupled with ammonia-based leachate residue, created further challanges for the Designers, to overcome managment of these issues.
A full wastewater recycling drainage system was designed and installed, complete with 11km of aeration pipes, under the tunnels and slabs, to contain and reuse the leachate generated.
