Project Description

  • The project involves the upgrade of Perenco's refrigeration system at Dimlington to comply with new environmental legislation.
  • Client: Parenco

In line with the Montreal Protocol, the Dimlington Gas Terminal is required to remove Freon R22 from its gas conditioning process. Perenco UK inherited this project following the acquisition of BP’s Southern Gas Assets (SGA) back in 2012. Perenco UK’s ethos to maximise value has driven the development of the projects scope of work to implement a novel combination of Best Available Technology as a cost effective means to removing Freon R22. A phased strategy was developed to ensure timely legislative compliance:

Phase I - Utilises a Joule-Thompson (J-T) auto-refrigeration system

Phase II -  Replaces MEG hydrate inhibition with Methanol, to reduce pressure drop

Phase III -  Installs of a new smaller refrigeration utilising R134A.

In December 2014 the works to install the J-T auto-refrigeration system (Phase I) across all the dewpoint trains was completed, marking the completion of Phase I in line with legislative requirements. Construction for Phases II & III continues to progress and is scheduled to be commissioned later this year.

Following achievement of the JT Phase completion milestone in December 2014, the DFRP has now been recognised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) in its 2015 Awards. The integrated project team has been awarded the prestigious Gold Award in recognition of the project consistently delivering a very high level of SHE performance, achieving outstanding control of risk and very low levels of harm.
